Somatic Meditation and Yoga Posture Practice Workshop

The activity of meditation as presented by Patanjali (as interpreted by Godfrey Devereux in Yoga Unveiled) is a completely natural process. We are always going into meditative states of mind, we are just too busy to notice. There is a spectrum to human awareness with two poles, one pole can be labelled the obivious and the other the subtle. The obvious end of the spectrum of awareness is the everyday world of objects and activity and at the other end a subtle no-thingness upon which all the activity depends. You do not need to be a super being to discover this deeply nourishing subtlety that is supporting all of us, you just have to look within and feel whatever there is to feel in your body. Of course in the hustle and bustle of the modern world we have become desensitised to the sensations in our bodies, making the sustained stillness of meditation difficult if not impossible for many of us. Yoga posture practice can provide a gentle but potent invitation to re-awaken sensitivity to the deep intelligence functioning within us, enabling us to effortlessly discover the joy of meditation. A meditation using the sensations of the body, in relaxed stillness most obviously the breath, is a somatic (of the cells, sensorial) meditation. This workshop will use the dynamic yoga method (created by Godfrey Devereux www.dynamicyoga.com) to gently prepare the body for the stillness of medita-tion, where we will explore using the breath to deepen the internalisation of awareness and invite the possibilty the meditative mind.
